VANCOUVER – BC Hydro expects a 40 per cent increase in energy demand in the province over the next 20 years, as the population expands and a much-touted liquefied natural gas industry fires up.
The Crown agency has released its draft plan for supplying British Columbia with energy for the next two decades.
The plan includes customer incentives and measures to save 7,800 gigawatt hours per year by 2021.
Today, B.C. uses about 57,000 gigawatt hours annually — a number expected to hit 80,000 gigawatt hours by 2033.
The plan says development of the Site C hydroelectric dam on the Peace River and meeting the demand of B.C.’s fledgling LNG industry are priorities.
Consultations on the draft plan will be held from Sept. 3 to Oct. 18, with a final report submitted to the government in November.
