Officers plead not guilty at disciplinary hearing to illegal G20 arrest

TORONTO – Two police officers at a disciplinary hearing have pleaded not guilty to illegally arresting a lawyer during the violent G20 summit of June 2010.

Nicholas Wright was cycling on Toronto’s Bloor Street when an officer stopped him, and said he was under arrest.

He says he was not told why he was under arrest, but was searched, handcuffed, and placed in the back of a cruiser.

Wright says he hadn’t done anything to warrant his detention.

But the defence says he was wearing swimming goggles around his neck, something “unusual” that he never mentioned in his complaints.

Wright admitted the omission was because it “looked bad for his story.”
