Kamloops man charged with assaulting an officer after police standoff

A 33-year-old Kamloops man is facing several charges including assault of a police officer after a standoff at a home in the city Tuesday.

Officers, including members of the Integrated Crisis Response Team, were called to a report of someone being threatened at a home in the 100 block of Clarke Street at approximately 11 a.m., June 5, according to an RCMP media release.

RCMP said the suspect, who may have had a weapon, tried to assault a responding officer and then went inside his residence.

The heavily-armed members of the Emergency Response Team were called in out of concern for the safety of the officers, bystanders and the well being of the suspect, RCMP said.

The suspect eventually surrendered to police and was arrested.

Damon Wade Pierce, 33, of Kamloops is facing charges of assault of a police officer with a weapon, obstruction of a police officer and failing to comply with a release order.

Pierce appeared in court of a bail hearing Tuesday and was kept behind bars. He’ll be back in court on June 12.

Anyone who witnessed the police incident, or has information including video, is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2024-16967.
