Mountie charged with dangerous driving following fatal crash in B.C.

VICTORIA – Prosecutors in B.C. have charged an RCMP constable with dangerous driving following an investigation into an alleged high-speed chase that ended with the death of a 21-year-old woman.

The Criminal Justice Branch says it decided against charging Const. Micah Chan with dangerous driving causing death for the June incident in the Shuswap-area city of Salmon Arm, B.C.

Spokesman Neil MacKenzie says prosecutors would be unable to prove Chan’s conduct contributed to the death of Courtenay Eggen of Cherryville, B.C.

At the time of the crash, the Independent Investigations Office said the alleged police chase occurred after a driver fled a routine traffic stop by police.

MacKenzie says the female driver crashed into a parked dump truck, and a short time later Chan also lost control of his vehicle and slid off the road.

Crown counsel received the IIO’s report Nov. 13, charges were sworn Thursday in Salmon Arm’s provincial court, and MacKenzie says Chan is scheduled to make his first court appearance Feb. 4, 2014.
