Flood Watch 2018: Sandbags now available in West Kelowna

WEST KELOWNA – With wet weather and an above-average snowpack looming, the City of West Kelowna is preparing for flooding.

Earlier this week the B.C. River Forecast Centre released its April snow survey showing the snowpack in local regions at 152 per cent of normal, the highest in the province.

Last month a portion of Lower Glenrosa Road was closed after heavy rain caused flooding and a washout and the City decided to start preparing for floods. Rotary Trails Park was closed to begin staging sand bags.

Sandbags are now available at Rotary Trails Park, the West Kelowna Yacht Club on Gellatly Road, Kinsmen Works Yard on Shannon Lake Road, 4081 Hitchner Road, across the street from the Rose Valley Fire Station on Westlake Road and across the street from the Glenrosa Fire Station on Gates Road.

“Private property owners living in flood-prone areas or near waterways are encouraged to consider how to protect their property in case of flooding,” the release says.

Homeowners using sandbags to protect their property are encouraged to review the Province of BC’s tips for sandbag wall construction.
