Defence to present case on behalf of ex-NFL player Josh Brent, charged with teammate’s death

DALLAS – Attorneys for former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent are expected to make their case that he was not drunk during a wreck that killed a practice squad player.

The defence is expected to begin calling witnesses Friday morning. The 25-year-old Brent is charged with intoxication manslaughter and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors over four days argued that Brent was drunk on the December 2012 night when he wrecked his Mercedes in suburban Dallas and killed Jerry Brown, a practice squad linebacker who was Brent’s teammate at the University of Illinois.

But Brent’s attorney, George Milner, has said that his client was only “guilty of being stupid behind the wheel of a car.” Milner has questioned blood tests and other evidence suggesting Brent was drunk.
