TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. – Parti Quebecois Leader Pauline Marois is blasting the idea that Jean Charest might be thinking of plunging Quebec into an election campaign within weeks.

A published report in today’s Montreal La Presse says the premier is leaning toward calling an election that would be held on Sept. 4.

The scenario would involve Charest announcing the vote on Aug. 1 — a date that has already been set aside for the next cabinet meeting.

Marois said in Trois-Rivieres today it would be highly cynical of the premier to launch a campaign smack in the middle of summer.

Charest was last elected in 2008 and has until December 2013 to call the vote.
