Montreal motorist on trial in two deaths amid allegations she was helping ducks
MONTREAL – A trial is underway for a Quebec woman charged in the deaths of two people amid allegations she stopped her car on a highway to help some ducks.
Emma Czornobaj has pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.
She is accused in the deaths of Andre Roy and his daughter Jessie, who were riding a motorcycle that slammed into her car in June 2010.
The Crown said in its opening statement today that Czornobaj wasn’t in her car, which stopped in the left lane of a highway south of Montreal.
The Crown is alleging she was on the side of the road, tending to a family of ducks.
Witnesses expected to testify include Roy’s widow, who was riding in a motorcycle behind the victims and saw the incident on Highway 30, south of Montreal.
The jury is composed of 10 men and two women.
