Christopher Morel’s go-ahead single lifts Marlins past Nationals

MIAMI (AP) — Christopher Morel hit a go-ahead single in the eighth to lift the Miami Marlins past the Washington Nationals 5-2 on Sunday.

Morel’s one-out hit to center against Gus Varland (0-1) put the Marlins up by one run in the eighth. Following Miami’s second double steal of the inning, Heriberto Hernández hit a two-run single that scored Morel and Jakob Marsee, who was part of both double steals to give him 12 stolen bases on the season, tied for fifth in the major leagues.

Miami leads with 48 stolen bases.

Andrew Nardi got the first two outs of the ninth before rookie Josh Ekness got the final out for his first big league save. Miami won its second straight game after losing five of its previous six.

Calvin Faucher (4-2) walked one and didn’t surrender a hit in two scoreless innings of relief.

ORIOLES 2, ATHLETICS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) — Chris Bassitt pitched six solid innings in relief and Leody Taveras threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the seventh to lift Baltimore to a win over the Athletics.

The Orioles announced shortly before the game that left-hander Keegan Akin would start on the mound instead of Bassitt, and that ploy worked out when Akin struck out two in a 1-2-3 first and then Bassitt (3-2) came in and yielded only one run in six innings.

Baltimore left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth, but in the latter inning took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Dylan Beavers that chased A’s starter Luis Severino (2-4).

Anthony Nunez walked two in the eighth but struck out Brent Rooker and got Tyler Soderstrom on a flyout to keep the Orioles in front. Rico Garcia worked a hitless ninth for his third save, preventing a three-game sweep by the A’s.

Carlos Cortes hit a sacrifice fly for the Athletics to open the scoring in the second, but Gunnar Henderson’s run-scoring infield single evened the score in the third.

RAYS 4, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) — Junior Caminero hit a solo homer over the Green Monster, Nick Martinez pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning and Tampa Bay beat Boston to win the rain-shortened series.

Tampa Bay won for the 14th time in 16 games after their seven-game winning streak was stopped Friday. The Rays gave up three or fewer runs for a franchise-record 16th straight game, the first team to accomplish the feat since 2010 San Francisco Giants did it in 18 straight.

Pitching two years and a day after his mother, Jina, died following a nearly eight-year battle with colon cancer, Boston starter Payton Tolle wore his pant legs near his knees showing his pink socks on Mother’s Day.

Martinez (4-1) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits with four strikeouts. Bryan Baker pitched the ninth for his 10th save despite putting two runners on.

Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras left with a bruised right hand after getting hit by a fastball.

PHILLIES 6, ROCKIES 0

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered twice, Bryce Harper also went deep and Philadelphia beat Colorado to win for the 10th time in 13 games since Don Mattingly replaced Rob Thomson as manager.

Schwarber has five home runs over his past four games, tying the New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge for the major league lead at 16. It is the second four-game home run streak of Schwarber’s major league career.

Harper went back-to-back with Schwarber in the first inning off Tomoyuki Sugano (3-3). Brandon Marsh was 4 for 4 with four singles and leads the major leagues in batting at .353 average.

Philadelphia was 9-19 when Mattingly took over and has followed six straight series losses with four straight series wins for the first time since 1984. The Phillies pitched a shutout on Mother’s Day for the second straight year after a 3-0 win at Cleveland in 2025.

Cristopher Sánchez (4-2) allowed six hits and struck out seven over seven innings, extending his shutout streak to 20 2/3 innings.

ANGELS 6, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO (AP) — Jo Adell hit a pair of solo homers, José Soriano struck out seven over 7 2/3 innings to stop a three-start winless steak and Los Angeles avoided a three-game sweep by beating Toronto.

Oswald Peraza added a two-run homer as Los Angeles ended an eight-game road losing streak dating to April 16, while also ending a nine-game slump in Toronto.

Soriano (6-2) gave up two hits and a walk in the first inning, including Kazuma Okamoto’s RBI double, but didn’t allow another runner until Myles Straw reached in the eighth with an infield hit, ending a streak of 20 consecutive outs.

Sam Bachman replaced Soriano after back-to-back singles loaded the bases and got Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to ground into a forceout.

Peraza hit a two-run drive in a the fifth and Adell homered in the sixth and the ninth. All three homers came off Eric Lauer (1-5), who allowed six runs and five hits in five innings. He hasn’t won since March 29 against the Athletics.

REDS 5, ASTROS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) — Andrew Abbott allowed three hits in six sharp innings and Spencer Steer homered to help Cincinnati beat Houston.

Elly De La Cruz had three hits and scored twice as the Reds won their second in a row following an eight-game losing streak. JJ Bleday provided a two-run triple.

Cincinnati took two of three in the weekend series, rebounding from a 10-0 defeat in the opener by giving up only one run over the next two games.

Abbott (2-2) struck out five and walked one, throwing 55 of his 85 pitches for strikes. Tejay Antone, Sam Moll and Graham Ashcraft each worked a perfect inning to finish the three-hitter.

Houston starter Kai-Wei Teng (1-3) held the Reds scoreless for the first three innings but was lifted after yielding four straight hits to begin the fourth.

TWINS 5, GUARDIANS 4

CLEVELAND (AP) — Kody Clemens had three hits and Kendry Rojas earned his first major league win with a strong outing in relief as the Minnesota Twins held off the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 on Sunday.

Brooks Lee hit a tiebreaking single in a four-run fifth inning for the Twins, who took two of three in the series from their AL Central rivals.

Making his second career appearance, Rojas (1-0) struck out five and walked three over 3 1/3 innings. He allowed one run and five hits.

The 23-year-old left-hander from Cuba entered to begin the second inning after opener Andrew Morris worked a 1-2-3 first.

Yoendrys Gómez pitched a perfect ninth for his third big league save and second this season.

WHITE SOX 2, MARINERS 1

CHICAGO (AP) — Randal Grichuk hit a solo home run and Drew Romo scored the winning run in the eighth inning for Chicago in a 2-1 win over Seattle.

Grichuk hit a 377-foot drive over the right field wall to tie the game. Romo tagged up on Miguel Vargas’ fly out to Randy Arozarena, who overthrew home.

In the ninth, the Mariners hit back-to-back singles and Seranthony Domínguez walked Rob Refsnyder to load the bases with no outs. Domínguez got out of the jam for his ninth save of the year.

White Sox starting pitcher Davis Martin allowed one run on three hits in six innings. Bryan Hudson (1-0) earned his first win of the season after giving up one hit in the eighth.

BREWERS 4, YANKEES 3

Brice Turang homered off David Bednar with two outs in the ninth inning, and Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of New York Yankees with a victory.

Bednar (1-3) struck out Joey Ortiz and Jackson Chourio to start the ninth before Turang hit a 411-foot drive over the center-field wall for his first big league walk-off homer.

Milwaukee had not swept the Yankees in a series of at least three games since August 1989. The Brewers improved their interleague record since 2022 to a major league-best 116-65. They are 14-7 against American League teams and 8-9 against National League squads this season.

New York’s Aaron Judge hit a solo shot off Logan Henderson in the first inning for his 16th homer, matching Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber for the major league lead. Judge has seven first-inning homers this year and 92 in his career.

Two days after his debut, the Yankees’ Spencer Jones got his first hit, a second-inning RBI single.

RANGERS 3, CUBS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jacob deGrom tied his season high with 10 strikeouts while earning the 1,900th of his career, Evan Carter hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Texas beat Chicago.

The Texas right-hander allowed three hits in seven innings while striking out Ian Happ three times to end Happ’s career-best streak for reaching base at 30 games.

The Rangers took the series with consecutive shutouts — their fourth and fifth of the season — after the Cubs opened the three-game set with a victory that clinched their second 10-game winning streak in a span of 23 games.

Josh Jung, who had three hits for the second game in a row, opened the scoring by racing home from third on Alejandro Osuna’s grounder wide of first in the fourth, his foot touching home on his slide just before the tag from catcher Carson Kelly on Michael Busch’s throw. The Cubs challenged, and the call was upheld on review.

GIANTS 7, PIRATES 6, 12 INNINGS

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jesús Rodríguez hit an RBI single in the 12th inning and San Francisco rallied from a pair of two-run deficits to beat Pittsburgh.

The Giants loaded the bases against Justin Lawrence (0-2) when Matt Chapman hit a double that only advanced automatic runner Heliot Ramos to third, and Drew Gilbert was intentionally walked.

Rodríguez followed with a single to right to give the struggling Giants just their third win in the last 12 games. The teams traded two-run innings in the 10th, with Spencer Horwitz hitting a two-run double in the top half to give Pittsburgh the lead and Willy Adames answering with a two-run single with two outs in the bottom half to tie the game at 6.

Ryan Borucki (1-1) escaped a first-and-third, no-out jam in the 11th and a bases-loaded jam in the 12th to earn the win.

Ramos hit a solo homer and RBI double for the Giants.

DIAMONDBACKS 5, METS 1

PHOENIX (AP) — Eduardo Rodriguez came within two outs of his first major league complete game, Ryan Waldschmidt had his first three big league RBIs and Arizona beat hapless New York.

Rodriguez (4-0) took a no-hit bud into the sixth inning and allowed four hits in 8 1/3 innings, earning an standing ovation as he walked off the field following Mark Vientos’ bloop single. Rodriguez struck out four and walked three.

The last-place Mets opened their nine-game road trip 5-2 and closed it with a thud.

New York had four hits — 12 in the three-game series — and three errors, dropping to 15-25. Third baseman Andy Ibáñez had two throwing errors, the second setting up Ketel Marte’s two-run triple in the sixth inning that put Arizona up 5-1.

PADRES 3, CARDINALS 2, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Castellanos hit a tying, two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning and Manny Machado delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th to rally San Diego past St. Louis.

Walker Buehler pitched six solid innings for the Padres, who earned a split of the four-game series and pulled into a tie with the rival Los Angeles Dodgers atop the NL West.

Xander Bogaerts singled against Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien leading off the ninth. O’Brien struck out the next two batters and got ahead 0-2 on Castellanos, who then worked the count full and drove the ninth pitch he saw, a 98 mph sinker, to left field for his second home run in his first season with San Diego.

Adrian Morejon (3-1) retired pinch-hitter José Fermín on a popup with two on to end the top of the 10th.

In the bottom half, the Padres loaded the bases against Gordon Graceffo (2-1) on an intentional walk to Jackson Merrill and a free pass to Fernando Tatis Jr. that moved automatic runner Ramón Laureano to third.

St. Louis brought in Fermín from left field to form a five-man infield, and Machado hit a 299-foot fly to right. Laureano scored with a headfirst slide ahead of Walker’s one-hop throw.

BRAVES 7, DODGERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bryce Elder allowed one hit in 5 2/3 scoreless innings, Mauricio Dubón had a three-run double and Atlanta defeated Los Angeles.

Drake Baldwin and Matt Olson homered for the Braves, who took two of three in a weekend series between National League division leaders by winning the last two games by identical scores. Atlanta is 11-1-1 in 13 series this season.

Baldwin and Olson connected late in the game off Justin Wrobleski, who gave up seven runs and seven hits in 8 2/3 innings. Wrobleski (5-1) had permitted five runs combined in his first six starts.

Elder (4-1) struck out eight and walked four while lowering his ERA to 1.81.

TIGERS 6, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Gage Workman came off the bench and hit his first major league homer, a two-run shot that sent Detroit past Kansas City to snap a five-game losing streak.

Matt Vierling had a two-run double and Riley Greene reached safely four times as the Tigers prevented a three-game sweep.

Called up hours earlier from Triple-A Toledo when Kerry Carpenter was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder sprain, Workman entered as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning.

Workman, whose middle name is Tater, drove a 1-1 slider from Nick Mears (2-2) to right field to give Detroit a 5-3 lead.

Enmanuel De Jesus (2-0), the fourth of six Tigers pitchers, retired all seven batters he faced. Kenley Jansen struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 483rd career save and seventh this season.
