iN NUMBERS: Nicotine use by BC youth continues to drop

Kids these days just aren’t smoking like they used to. Even when you include vaping in the equation nicotine use is way down.

The McCreary Centre Society published their latest findings, May 13, from its BC Adolescent Health Survey. More than 38,000 youth between the ages of 12 to 18 in 59 of the province 60 school districts were surveyed.

The survey found that nicotine use by youth correlated with rural areas, extreme sports, cannabis use and skipping school.

Here are the numbers:

  • 36: Per cent of Okanagan youth surveyed have smoked or vaped.
  • 38: Per cent of youth in the Thompson, Cariboo, Shuswap surveyed have smoked or vaped.
  • 28: Per cent of BC youth surveyed have smoked or vaped.
  • 15: Per cent of BC youth surveyed had smoked tobacco, which is down from 56 per cent in 1998.
  • 42: Per cent of BC youth surveyed had first tried tobacco after age 15.
  • 20: Years ago 44 per cent of BC youth surveyed first tried tobacco at age 12 or younger.
  • 3: Per cent of BC youth surveyed who participated in extreme sports had also smoked from a hookah.
  • 4: Times a week. That’s how often BC youth surveyed had to participate in extreme sports to see the highest correlation with nicotine use.
  • 73: Per cent of BC youth surveyed who smoked tobacco 20 days a month also smoked cannabis 20 days a month.
  • 75: Per cent of BC youth surveyed who vaped for 20 days in a month had also skipped school.
  • 55: Per cent of BC youth surveyed who vaped for 20 days in a month missed school because of their mental health.
  • 45: Per cent of BC youth surveyed who said they vaped 10 or more days in a month had missed dinner for a week.
