Arson investigation launched into massive fire at Penticton construction site

It’s been more than a week since a massive fire razed a Penticton construction site, and police now say it was arson.

Penticton RCMP addressed the fire for the first time today, June 5, confirming investigators consider it suspicious and that it’s under criminal investigation.

“The assessment of this scene was unique, and it took several days to get the approval required to conduct the forensic fire examination,” Supt. Beth McAndie said in a media release.

Due to safety concerns surrounding a crane at the site of what was to be a 200-bed long-term care home, investigators were slow to get close to the scene. It’s the same reason the City of Penticton’s evacuation order for 10 nearby homes remained active for several days.

Fire investigators got onto the scene of the fire on June 3. It’s not clear when police deemed the fire to be arson.

“We appreciate the patience of the evacuees and those impacted by this incident. This investigation is a priority for the detachment,” McAndie said.

It’s not clear whether police have reviewed surveillance footage in the area or if the cause of the fire is known.

The Green Avenue fire on May 27 not only burned the construction site but also sent embers several blocks away, sparking six spot fires. There was no known damage to other properties.

According to the news release, Penticton RCMP will provide “relevant updates” when possible, but no details of the investigation were included in the statement.
