UEFA hits English football with $1.7M penalty for Champions fixture clashes

NYON, Switzerland – UEFA has taken 1.3 million euros (C$1.72 million) from English football’s share of Champions League television money as punishment for scheduling domestic matches against Europe’s top club competition.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel acted after “calendar clashes relating to the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.”

The cash was previously withheld and represents 10 per cent of UEFA payments due to the English Football Association for 2010-11.

UEFA says the money will be spread among clubs in other countries. Most must be spent on youth training.

UEFA says it also fined the English FA 50,000 euros (C$66,222).

English officials were repeatedly warned about league and cup matches clashing with the Champions League.

UEFA says it will “establish a working group, which will involve representatives of the FA, in order to avoid calendar clashes in future.”
