Flooding forces evacuation alerts in two Rocky Mountain communities in B.C.

ELKFORD, B.C. – An evacuation order has been lifted in Elkford, B.C., but an alert remains in place as the town near the Alberta boundary copes with the same deluge that caused devastating flooding in Calgary.

Emergency Info BC says residents of the Rocky Mountain community should be prepared to leave their homes should rain return and the Elk River rise.

But a reception centre that had been set up on Thursday has now been closed at it appears the worst threat has passed.

A state of emergency remains in place but Highway 43 through the community has been reopened to all traffic.

Another evacuation order was issued Friday night by the regional district of East Kootenay due to flooding in the area of Hosmer, near Fernie.

RCMP and Search and Rescue volunteers evacuated a trailer park and surrounding residents after high water breached part of the dike along the Lower Hosmer river.
