Canada’s basketball team beats Jamaica 85-64 at FIBA World Cup qualifying tourney
CARACAS, Venezuela – Point guard Cory Joseph had 17 points and 10 assists as Canada defeated Jamaica 85-64 on Friday in the opening game of the FIBA Americas basketball championship.
The San Antonio Spurs guard came up big at the end of the third quarter when he scored eight straight points. Included was a three-pointer at the buzzer that gave Canada a 60-50 lead.
Brady Heslip added 17 points off the bench for Canada. Levon Kendall had 13 points and eight rebounds while Tristan Thompson had 11 points and 12 boards.
Canada’s next game is Saturday against Puerto Rico.
The four tournament semifinalists advance to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
