Nunavut premier won’t seek top job after election
IQALUIT, Nunavut – Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak (EHR’-ee-ack) has announced she won’t be seeking the territory’s top political job after the fall election.
Aariak says she plans to run in the Oct. 28 vote and hopes to retain her seat in Iqaluit East.
But she says she won’t stand again for premier when elected MLAs choose a leader in the territory’s consensus form of government.
Aariak was first elected to the legislature and became premier in 2008.
She says she made the announcement now so that candidates in the current campaign will have lots of time to consider whether they want to stand for the premier’s job if they win a seat.
The 58-year-old says she feels that after five years in office, it’s time for someone else to take a turn.
