An 18-year-old man is dead after a crash on a rented e-scooter in Kamloops over a week ago.

Paramedics were called to the West End and took the critically injured rider to Royal Inland Hospital around 4 a.m., Aug. 16, according to an RCMP media release issued today, Aug. 24.

He was pronounced dead in hospital, and police are now investigating what led to his death, but there’s no evidence to suggest another vehicle was involved.

Police got to the scene around 6 a.m. and seized the rented e-scooter, but they did not find a helmet at the scene.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said he may not have been wearing one at the time.

Interior Health began tracking e-scooter injuries when they were introduced to Okanagan cities several years ago.

Emergency departments saw major injuries in the first year, but they began to taper off over time and there have been no known fatalities in those cities.

Kamloops only launched a rental fleet this spring and the 18-year-old who was found at Battle Street and Lee Road appears to be the first to have died on an e-scooter in the Southern Interior.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends as they navigate through this unthinkable tragedy,” Staff Sgt. Shoihet said in the release.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating alongside Kamloops RCMP.

The man who died has not been identified.
