Arson charge laid in connection with Vernon house fire

A 23-year-old Vernon man has been arrested following a fire that caused significant damage to a Vernon home Sept. 7.

According to a Sept. 9 Vernon North Okanagan RCMP media release, the fire broke out about noon at a residential structure on Goose Lake Road, Vernon.

“Fire crews responded and extinguished the blaze, which caused significant damage to the home,” Vernon RCMP said in the media release. “No injuries were reported.”

Photos show what appears to be the entire property engulfed by flames.

One person was arrested at the scene in connection with the fire.

Court files show that 23-year-old Buder Hayat has been charged with arson damaging property and remains in custody waiting for a bail hearing.

Outside of a speeding ticket, Hayat does not have a criminal record in BC.

Police say that the investigation remains ongoing and no further details will be released at this time.
