The guy behind the funniest campaign ads in Kelowna

Brady Rogers isn’t your typical candidate for city council and his ads definitely reflect that.

Rogers owns and operates, The Rogerie, a store in downtown Kelowna and his posts online might make you think he isn’t serious about doing the job in city hall, but he says that’s not the case.

“Funny is different than unserious. And I hope that comes across in my messaging,” he told iNFOnews.ca.

“I am not an experienced politician. The benefit of that is I’m not in it to make it into a career or anything like that, I really genuinely just think I can do some good here. And I think outside perspectives are valuable.”

The outgoing iteration of Kelowna city council had one member under 60 years old, Loyal Wooldridge, who isn’t running for reelection. This time around there are some relatively young guns in the race alongside Rogers like Davis Kyle and Trevor McAleese.

“It is good to see that there’s a few more young people. I hope a few get in,” Rogers said.

He became more involved in local issues recently when he started posting videos about the Hotel Eldorado boardwalk controversy.

“I started building this following, not even really intentionally, just through the Eldorado videos and some of these new products I’ve been developing. And that’s created this opportunity to do something useful on council,” he said.

He said he understands why people would question whether he actually wanted to win or just wanted some publicity.

“If people are concerned about that, certainly challenge it. Question me, but ask the question, see what you think about what I’m doing,” he said. “The real test is what my actual policies are, what my thinking is and what my platform is.”

His social media presence is based on the fact that he’s honest and transparent, and didn’t see a reason to campaign any differently.

“I didn’t want to become a politician to do this. I figured the best way to approach it is to just be myself, do it the way I would do it,” he said.

“Since transparency and authenticity, I think, is what people value about all my social media and me in person.”

While he’s not a politician, he thinks his outside perspective is something city hall could use these days.

“As I’ve joked, I am very inexperienced in this way. But I also have a lot of reasons to trust myself, and I do take it very seriously,” he said.
