Heat wave smashing high temperature records in Okanagan; Kamloops not far behind

Think it’s a hot one in Kamloops and the Okanagan this afternoon? You’re absolutely right. The mercury is popping out of thermometers across the region today, June 2, with all three major Okanagan cities breaking warm temperature records.

Kamloops isn’t far behind, and will probably set a record later this afternoon.

Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan says unofficially, Kelowna is in record-setting territory this afternoon with a reported temperature of 35 Celsius, beating the previous high for June 2 of 34.5 C.

Vernon reported a temperature of 34.7 C, which breaks the previous record of 34.4 C set in 2007.

Penticton has already reported a temperature of 35 C which beats the old record of 33.9 C, set in 1961 and in 1970.

Kamloops has reported a temperature of 35.2 C so far this afternoon, just shy of the record of 35.6 C set in 1961.

Osoyoos is also in record territory, reporting a temperature of 35.1 C, which beats the old record for June 2 of 35 C set in 1970 and in 2007.

Castellan says to enjoy the heat while you can. The weekend forecast is calling for temperatures in the high teens and a 60 per cent chance of showers.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
