Stuart Rink closes after record 94 days
KELOWNA – A day of temperatures as high as 7 degrees Thursday means Stuart Park Ice Rink is officially closed for the season.
City of Kelowna Arena and Stadium Supervisor Steve Fagan says the rink stayed open to the public this year for a record 94 days. The previous record was set last year when the rink closed after 92 days.
Several city workers were on site Thursday, clearing the ice with a skid steer and shovels. The ice and slush will be removed to one of the cities designated snow areas.
"It's a potential safety issue," says Fagan. "We don't want to see anyone get hurt trying to skate on unsafe ice."
The cedar beams and rubber matts are set to be removed Friday and placed in storage until next winter.
"It was a great year," Fagan says. "We look forward to doing it again next year."
