Former Penticton councillor James Miller nets more sex crime guilty verdicts

An Ontario judge has found a former Penticton city councillor guilty of four more counts of historic sexual abuse.

James Miller appeared in a Sarnia, Ontario courtroom again today, Oct. 2, as the judge in a second trial for the disgraced former politician and newspaper editor delivered his decision.

Miller is now waiting to be sentenced for nine charges in total, all connected to sexual abuse more than 30 years ago.

Miller was convicted on four charges today including one charge for sexual assault, one for sexual interference of a person under 16 and two for invitation of sexual touching.

Miller’s two Ontario Superior Court trials happened back to back in the spring, with his second trial focused on allegations from one victim. Like the others, the victim was a boy at the time of the abuse, playing on the youth basketball team Miller coached in the early-1990s.

He vehemently denied abusing any of the boys during his testimony at both trials.

Prosecutor Suzanne LaSha accused Miller of “dating” the boys, taking some to his home, professional sports games and having sleepovers.

Miller called LaSha’s accusations “moronic” and “offensive.”

After his first conviction last month, Miller was immediately disqualified from public office after more than two years on suspension. He remains on bail.

Sentencing hearings will proceed separately with the first scheduled for November. It’s not clear what the Crown is seeking for jailtime yet, but LaSha previously told the court she’ll be seeking a “lengthy” sentence as she tried and failed to have Miller’s bail revoked.
