Accident sends teenage pedestrian to hospital

VERNON – A 14-year-old girl is in hospital after being hit by a car yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on 32 Street near 24 Avenue, just up from the lights at the bottom of Hospital Hill. RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says the Vernon girl stepped off the curb to jaywalk across the street at the same time the lights turned green and a Dodge pick-up truck accelerated up the hill towards Kelowna.

“The driver saw her just at the last second and he did his best to avoid the collision,” Molendyk says.

The girl struck the side of the vehicle along the mirror and was unconscious for a period of time. Paramedics rushed her to Vernon Jubilee Hospital and it’s believed she suffered a broken ankle and head trauma.

Molendyk says the Kelowna driver was cooperative, and that speed was not a factor in the accident.

A detour was in effect for some time on 32 Street while police investigated the scene.
