Alcohol suspected as factor in fatal crash in Keremeos

A 17-year-old Cawston woman died in a single-vehicle crash in Keremeos Wednesday night.

Emergency crews were called at around 11:30 p.m., Oct. 7, to a report a vehicle had crashed into the Similkameen River in Keremeos, according to an RCMP media release issued today, Oct. 9.

The vehicle left the road in the area of River Road and Bridge Street and came to rest on its side in the river.

The driver and passengers were injured and taken to hospital. A 17-year-old female passenger from Cawston died in hospital from her injuries.

RCMP said alcohol is suspected to be a factor and a criminal investigation is underway.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young woman who lost her life in this tragic incident,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Dan Pollock said in the release.

Investigators are looking for witnesses and any dash camera, security camera or cellphone video from the area of River Road and Bridge Street in Keremeos, between 11 p.m. and midnight Oct. 7.
