Saskatchewan snowmobiler dies in B.C. avalanche

CLEARWATER – An avalanche buried two snowmobilers near Blue River Friday night, killing one of them.

RCMP say a group of snowmobilers were in the back bowl on Red Sands Mountain north of Blue River when the avalanche struck at about 7:20 p.m.

The group raced to the where two of their party were buried. One person was found immediately and dug out of the snow.

The second, a 36-year-old man from Lloydminster, Sask. was found and dug out, but died at the scene.

Clearwater Search and Rescue volunteers weren’t able to get to the scene that night due to the high avalanche risk.

On Saturday morning, the B.C. Coroner, two avalanche technicians and members of the SAR team were flown in by helicopter.

The B.C. Coroner’s service is investigating.

Blue River is about 230 km north of Kamloops or about halfway between Kamloops and Jasper, Alta.
