iN VIDEO: Abandoned dog who lead BCSPCA rescuers to her pups making full recovery

An amazing mother dog who recently saved her nine new born puppies is making a full recovery.

The abandoned pit bull cross, Dallas, lead a B.C. SPCA officer to her litter of nine puppies on a property in the Fraser Valley at the end of June this year, saving herself and the pups.

“We would never have found these puppies if Dallas hadn’t led us there,” protection officer Eileen Drever said in a media release. “She is an amazing mom who knew her puppies needed help.”

Today, Dallas and her pups are continuing to thrive in their foster home. The nine wiggling pups have been weaned and named, and will be ready for adoption in September.

Dallas is starting to put on more weight now that she has weaned her puppies and is also starting to come out of her shell, according to the SPCA.

“Dallas is an amazing mom who is getting a well-deserved rest from her puppies,” foster mom Bernadette said in the release. “She is the sweetest dog and is becoming a playful little goofball. She loves lots of belly rubs and cuddles and snuggles during nap time.”

Initially all the dogs were given a full check-up by a veterinarian and Dallas was put on a feeding program to safely bring her weight up to normal. They have been dewormed twice while in foster care. 

“Even after the first round of deworming and being in our home for a few days we saw an increase in their energy and change in demeanour for the better,” Bernadette said.

It turns out Dallas’ owner thought she had become the victim of predators after she disappeared and subsequently surrendered all of the dogs after recognizing he could not provide them with the care they required.

Dallas is still learning what living in a house and being taken care of is all about, the SPCA said.

“Dallas was used to being on the constant lookout for food, but she is learning that she doesn’t need to scavenge in trash to find her next meal,” Bernadette said.

She said Dallas is an incredible dog who deserves to find the best forever home, adding the puppies are super active and eager to explore the world. They are now eating kibble and love playing with their toys and wrestling with one another.

“They all enjoy a good snuggle and will make great additions to their adoptive families,” Bernadette said.

Dallas will be spayed and after she has fully recovered she will be available for adoption. The puppies will be available for adoption in approximately one month.

A naming contest was held for the nine puppies. The winning names were trees in the province: Cedar, Aspen, Oak, Holly, Douglas, Sitka, Cherry, Juniper and Maple.
