Penticton throws WestJet a welcome party

PENTICTON – The round-trip WestJet flights from Penticton to Calgary won’t start until Oct. 26, but hundreds of people turned out Saturday to express their enthusiasm for the service.

Mayor Garry Litke precided over a formal welcome in Gyro Park as part of the Downtown Penticton Association Volunteer Appreciation Celebration. The service was announced on Friday.

Litke received a scale model of an airliner from WestJet Encore president Ferio Pugliese.

A group of WestJetters also flew into the city to take part. They toured some of the city's most well known attractions.

The city has been lobbying both WestJet and Air Canada for regular service to Alberta for years. A group of citizens even created a Facebook page as part of the effort.
