Gas rupture forces people out of their homes in Glenmore

KELOWNA – Road blocks were up in Glenmore and homes evacuated as crews dealt with a natural gas leak this afternoon.

RCMP say an excavator hit a natural gas line in a backyard on Valley Road just south of Kane Road.

Police cordoned off the area, evacuating the people from four homes and closing Valley Road until Fortis B.C. turned off the gas.

“When we arrive on the scene our first priority is to make the area safe,” Fortis spokesperson David Wylie says. “We assess the damage and then we bring the gas under control so we can safely make repairs.”

He stresses a third party contractor broke the line, not a Fortis crew.

Four homes are without natural gas until the repairs are scheduled to be finished by 5 p.m., says Wylie.

No one was hurt during the incident.
