UPDATE: Man in custody after potential incendiary device found outside Kamloops home

KAMLOOPS – A Keremeos man is in police custody after several townhouse units were evacuated due to a potential incendiary device found in Kamloops this morning.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release police responded to a report of an incendiary device at a home on Cambridge Crescent around 2 a.m. today, Aug. 29.

She says officers located the "potential incendiary device" outside. Immediately, they evacuated homes within the Brock townhouse complex and the RCMP Explosive Device Unit was contacted.

An incendiary device is defined as a device designed to start fires or destroy sensitive equipment using fire.

The Explosive Device Unit arrived a few hours later and secured the device. A police dog trained in explosive detection was brought in from Kelowna but no other devices were located.

There were no injuries from this incident and the residents have been allowed back into their homes.

Shelkie says a 38-year-old Keremeos man arrested at the home is being held in custody until he goes before a judge. The suspect is previously known to police.

Earlier this morning, RCMP asked the public to stay away from the area while they dealt with a "police situation" and closed the area to traffic for several hours.
