Mayor Rob Ford eligible to run in byelection as judge clarifies ruling

TORONTO – The judge who punted the mayor of Toronto from office says Rob Ford can run again if council calls a byelection.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Charles Hackland issued the clarification today.

There had been some confusion in Hackland’s judgment issued Monday in which he booted Ford from office for breaking conflict-of-interest rules.

In the decision, Hackland said Ford couldn’t run again for the “current term.”

Some took that to mean until the end of the current council term in 2014.

However, Ford and supporters said his term ended with his expulsion from office, meaning he was eligible to run in any byelection.
