World Cup races cancelled; Hirscher closes in on overall title; Maze takes super-G title

LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland – Organizers have cancelled the final World Cup super-G races after only 10 of 27 men’s racers started, putting Marcel Hirscher of Austria close to a second straight overall title.

The cancelled women’s race gave the season-long super-G title to Tina Maze of Slovenia. She could only have been caught by Julia Mancuso.

Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway had already won the men’s super-G title but is now prevented from scoring race points in his overall pursuit of Hirscher.

Svindal trails Hirscher by 149 points with the Austrian technical specialist’s best two events remaining.

Organizers called off Thursday’s race 45 minutes after Klaus Kroell of Austria crashed into the safety nets. He was taken by helicopter for treatment.
